01The open-jar symbol
The open-jar symbol is a small drawing of a jar with a number and the letter M. The number is the months the maker suggests using the product after you first open it. For example, a jar with 12M beside it is meant to be used for about twelve months after opening. Not every product carries it.
02General guidance by product type
| Product | Commonly cited range |
|---|---|
| Mascara and liquid eyeliner | About 3 months |
| Liquid foundation and concealer | About 6 to 12 months |
| Lipstick and lip gloss | About 12 months |
| Powder products | About 12 to 24 months |
| Nail polish | Until it thickens or changes |
These are common ranges from general consumer guidance. The label on your product comes first.
03Signs it may be time to replace
- The color, texture or smell has changed.
- The product has separated and will not mix back together.
- It is well past the date or the open-jar number.
- You are not sure when you opened it. If in doubt, replace it.
04Storing makeup so it lasts
Keep products tightly closed, away from heat and direct sun, and out of damp rooms. A drawer is often better than a sunny bathroom shelf. Write the date you opened a product on it with a marker if you like.
