02A simple at-home routine

  1. Wash and dry your hands and nails.
  2. Remove old polish with remover as the label directs.
  3. Shape nails gently with a file, in one direction.
  4. Apply thin coats of polish and let each dry.
  5. Store bottles upright with the cap closed.

03Habits that go easy on nails

  • Take a break between polishes now and then.
  • Do not pick or peel polish off, which can pull at the nail surface.
  • Keep files and clippers clean, and do not share them.

04When to ask a professional

If a nail changes color or shape, becomes painful, or the skin around it is red, swollen or sore, ask a pharmacist or clinician. This site explains labels; it cannot assess your nails or skin.
