Shade words
What shade, finish and label words are describing, in plain language. Definitions, not endorsements.
Undertone
- Cool undertone
- A term makers use for skin with pink or blue tones. It describes a color family, not a skin condition.

- A term for skin with yellow or golden tones.
- Neutral undertone
- A term for a balance of warm and cool tones.
Finish
- Matte
- A flat, non-shiny finish.
- Satin
- A soft finish between matte and glossy.
- Dewy
- A finish that looks slightly moist or luminous.
- Shimmer
- A finish with fine reflective particles.
Coverage
- Sheer
- Lets skin show through. Usually builds up with more layers.
- Medium
- Evens out color while skin still shows.
- Full
- Covers more of the skin underneath.
Label terms
- Non-comedogenic
- A maker’s term meaning the product is formulated to avoid clogging pores. A label claim, not a guarantee.
- Hypoallergenic
- A maker’s term with no single legal definition.
- May contain (+/-)
- A note on shade ranges: the list shows ingredients used across several shades, and any one shade may not contain all of them.
- PAO symbol
- The open-jar symbol with a number and the letter M, showing the months to use a product after opening.
